Dogs are good to the heart, too

Spending some time caressing a dog can decrease the anxiety of someone with heart problems, and even help in the recovery while in the hospital

Spending some time caressing a dog can decrease the anxiety of someone with heart problems, and even help in the recovery while in the hospital.

American researchers say that the benefits of those who had animal contact were bigger then that of patients with heart problems that were visited by volunteers or of those who were left alone, said the scientists during an American Heart Society meeting.

“This sort of therapy justifies a more carefully study of this option as an auxiliary therapy in heart problem cases. Dogs are a great comfort”, said Kathie Cole, a nurse of the Medical Center of the University of California.

“They make people happier, calmer. They make people feel loved. This is something very important when a person is scared and not feeling well.”

Stress can worsen the status of a heartsick person, but Cole said that no one had so far analyzed more thoroughly if stress relief measures, like caressing an animal, could help so much that it could be measured.

Cole’s team has found that a 12-min visit by a dog helps heart and breathing functions, decreases pulmonary pressure, lessening the production of harmful hormones and diminishes anxiety.

The scientists followed 76 people with heart problems in a hospital. From this group, some had the 12-min dog visit, others a volunteer and some where left alone.

The anxiety numbers fell 24% in those who were visited by dogs, 10% in those visited by volunteers, and they were the same in those who were left alone.
